Sports in New Zealand

New Zealanders are proud sportspeople and have a few standout fields that we excel in on the world stage.

These include Rugby,Cricket,Yachting,Canoeing Kayaking, to name but a few of the hundreds of sporting areas kiwis love.Also popular are golf, tennis, cycling and a variety of water sports, particularly sailing, whitewater kayaking, surf lifesaving skills and rowing. Snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding are also very popular.In fact some of the best skiing anywhere in the world can be found in New Zealands south Island in the winter months which are from July - Sept traditionally ,but sometimes the skiing can go right through to about December !

Equestrian sportsmen and sportswomen make their mark in the world, with Mark Todd being chosen international "Horseman of the Century", and all the way down to the juniors at pony club level.In the badminton horse trials in the Uk,New Zealand  is always very well represented in the teams and individual events.

Olympic Games

New Zealand is recognised internationally for achieving exceptionally well on a medals-to-population ratio at Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. With apopulation of only 4 Million people this country always out performs the top countries when you base it on a population to medals ratio.

Yachting, America's Cup

New Zealand is a leading nation in the world of yachting, especially open water long distance or around the world races. Round-the-world yachtsman, Sir Peter Blake was a national hero. Unfortunately his life was ended prematurely by pirates in the Amazon River.Sir Peter was well known for his expeditions and his travelling spirit and New Zealand was a Nation in  Mourning upon the News on his untimely death.

Auckland hosted the last two America's Cup regattas (2000 and 2003). In 2000, Team New Zealand successfully defended the trophy which they had won in 1995 in San Diego, which made them the only team in the history of the Cup to successfully defend a challenge other than a United States team.Bearing in mind the Americas Cup History and drama's, this is an incredible feat on the world yachting stage.
